As Retailers Cut Back Cities Confront 'Ghostboxes'

"As Retailers Cut Back Cities Confront 'Ghostboxes'":
Hundreds of anxious shoppers watched as city officials used power saws to cut 2-by-4s during Home Depot Inc.'s ribbon-cutting ceremony for its 102,700-square-foot building center in Bismarck. Less than three years later, the home improvement retailer shuttered the underperforming store, leaving a big orange empty eyesore on the outskirts of town.

The building, sitting derelict and silent on acres of asphalt, is now listed for sale at $10.5 million. But there's been little interest in the near windowless warehouse-like building that occupies a lot the size of a dozen football fields.

NCBI ROFL

NCBI ROFL reveals the funny in science:
The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is part of the United States National Library of Medicine, a branch of the National Institutes of Health. The NCBI houses a number of databases including PubMed, an extensive index of biomedical research articles.
...
We never claimed to be the first to read these articles... we're just posting what makes us laugh.

A Wind-Powered Knitting Factory

This wind-powered knitting factory is brilliant:
With the power of the wind, a knitting machine knits from the outside towards the inside of the building. The knitted material is harvested from time to time and rounded-off in individually packaged scarves. Each scarf has its own label which tells you in how much time it has been knitted and on which date.

Delhi HC Decriminalises Homosexuality

"Delhi HC Decriminalises Homosexuality":
In a revolutionary verdict, Delhi High Court on Thursday legalised gay sex among consenting adults.

The Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code as far as it criminalises gay sex among consenting adults is violation of fundamental rights, the high court said.

Any kind of discrimination is anti-thesis of right to equality, the court said, while allowing plea of gay rights activists for decriminalisation of homosexuality.

Extremely Up Close and Personal with an Ant

"Ant-Eutetramorium mocquerysi":
This ant is from Madagascar, and is named Eutetramorium mocquerysi. The species is notable for having wingless queens that are indistinguishable from workers.

This image is composed of 400 pictures, and it's magnified 400x using a scanning electron microscope. The ant was given to us to image by Brian Fisher (http://www.calacademy.org/science/heroes/bfisher/) an entomologist at the California Academy of Sciences.

A Papercraft Castle on the Ocean

"A Papercraft Castle on the Ocean":
I had the immense opportunity to see this wonderful paper craft art installation by a genius of the name of Wataru Itou (伊藤航), a young student of a major art university here in Tokyo. The installation is hand made over four years of hard work, complete with electrical lights and a moving train, all made of paper!

Cats in Costume

"Cats in Costume" shows some of the more brilliantly costumed cats of our era. I snorted often and well.

Giving Up My iPod for a Walkman

A 13-year-old boy in the UK gave up his iPod for a 30-year-old Walkman for a week, and it took him three days to realize that he could flip the cassette tape over to hear more music. And so begins another chapter in my book, "Thing That Make Me Feel Old".

There, I Fixed It

There, I Fixed It:
There are as many sources for the word Kludge as there are jury-rigged mailboxes in the mobile home parks of America. Whether the source of the word is Gaelic, German, or Naval Acronym, we know them when we see them, and on this web site, we celebrate these iconic images of mankind’s eternal struggle to hammer square pegs into round holes (with duct tape.)

Debunking Canadian Health Care Myths

"Debunking Canadian Health Care Myths":
...if the only way we compared the two systems was with statistics, there is a clear victor. It is becoming increasingly more difficult to dispute the fact that Canada spends less money on health care to get better outcomes.

Nice Tweets

"Crave: Nerdist “Nice Tweets” Tee":
Know how when you’re talking to a guy and his eyes are wandering about eight inches below your mouth you kind of start to think that those tacky “my eyes are up higher” tees are maybe justified?

(Thanks, Saviabella!)

Amsterdam's National Museum of Spectacles

I love Amsterdam's National Museum of Spectacles (click on the bottom doorbell to enter the english version of the site). You can't really look at the museum online, but you can shop for actual eyewear, which makes me swoon.

(Thanks, Jana!)

A Great Optical Illusion

The apparently different green and blue spirals in this optical illusion are the same colour. Even when you know, your eyes cannot see that they are the same.

(Thanks, Starcat!)
